Today, December 8, 2018, Msgr. Harrie Smeets is consecrated and installed as the new Bishop of Roermond. He succeeds the Most Reverend Frans Wiertz, who retired last December 2017. He had been the good and untiring Bishop of Roermond for 25 years. After his silver years of faithful service, he retired and turned over the “key” of the Diocese to Bishop Harrie Smeets, the much loved Dean of Venray.
For one whole year, we, the religious, priests and faithful of this Diocese, prayed for a Shepherd who will continue the mission of Christ in this part of the world. Now we rejoice to see this day. We are grateful to God for giving us a faithful Shepherd in Bishop Frans Wiertz and we are thankful, too, for the gift of Bishop Harrie Smeets to succeed him. We promise him our prayerful support and obedience as our Shepherd and Ordinary.
May our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, whose feast we celebrate today, be his constant companion and help in every situation and need. May she obtain for him the grace of becoming a “Shepherd” after the heart of Christ, the Great and Good Shepherd of his flock.
Our warm congratulations and prayerful best wishes to our new Bishop, His Excellency, the Most Reverend Harrie Smeets!
